Purevsuren Sharav is from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. She is a real nomadic girl, studied International Relations (MA) at PPCU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with the scholarship of Stipendium Hungaricum. During the time she spent here, she realized that she has to try more to do her best. She hopes that she will have an opportunity to contribute to the development of her country in international stage.
Please, tell us about yourself.
I am Purevsuren Sharav and 26 years old. I am from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. I am a graduate of Pazmany Peter Catholic University. I studied for master’s degree of International Relations in Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with the scholarship of Stipendium Hungaricum.
There are several universities in Hungary. Why did you choose to come to Hungary and to Pázmány?
First of all, experience of Hungary is quite similar to Mongolia we both went through socialism and then capitalism. Second, the Hungarian governmental scholarship gave me an opportunity to study and live in Hungary. In the procedure of application for the university, PPCU was my second choice. I did an interview with teachers via skype and I liked it.
What were your expectations?
Generally, it was the same as my expectation with the image of European city and international students. But one thing was much interesting for me. Sharing our different experiences and different knowledge with distinct culture was always make me thoughtful.
How did you like Pázmány Péter Catholic University? Have your expectations been fulfilled?
Fortunately, I met many friendly people with full of knowledge and highly educated lecturers. I also really enjoyed my life in dormitory in Piliscsaba with comfortable room in quit place. It was like dream.
Did you enjoy studying here? What was the best thing about PPCU?
Yes, I did. The best thing was about our lecturers. Their knowledge, experience and skill were great. I really appreciated and learnt a lot. They have really high ethics to communicate with international students and respect to the diverse kind of cultures. Learning is not only from teachers but also from each other for students.
Can you mention a challenge you have faced at PPCU?
Of course, every new thing is the challenge for everyone. But the biggest challenge was COVID19 pandemic. We had to study online for about a semester. But every single detail of our program was informed by email and I was guided very well. Of course, there were some misunderstanding but they always try to help us to solve our problems. And also during that time, most important thing was writing thesis. I gave up and not sure to finish everything. But I have done everything with the great support and instruction of my supervisor.
What are the biggest differences you see between the university experience here and in your home country?
The biggest difference is the tendency of teachers and lecturers. In my home country, teaching method is outdated and too general. But it was very open to the relation between students and lecturers. I think that this is very important to work each students and give them the equal opportunity to improve themselves in their research field. In this way, it really develops the critical thinking of student.
What has your experience here helped you to gain and learn?
I really loved discussions with international students with the great work of teachers on making appropriate atmosphere among students for any topics.
What have you learnt about yourself during the time you spent at PPCU?
During the time I spent at PPCU, I realized that I have to try more to do my best. There were many highly educated and mature people around me. I used to learn from them in every single minute.
What would be your advice to your first year self?
My advice is “try to open yourself and expand your networking”
What has Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship helped you to achieve?
I got my master’s degree which is fully accepted in Europe. But most important thing is much more than this. I will see them in the future by applying them in my life.
How did you enjoy Hungary? What did you like the most? What was the most surprising thing?
I travelled to several cities in Europe. After that, I felt that the Hungary is one of the safest place in Europe. I liked it the most. It feels like home. Most surprising thing was Hungarian people really nice for foreigners. They really want to help sincerely. They also really nice to Mongolians because some believes that we have same ancestors.
What were your first impressions here?
Honestly, my first impression was “Okay I’ll live in this old city with old buildings for two years”.
Did you miss anything from your home country, from your hometown?
Yes of course, I am a nomad girl. I missed the wild nature of my country a lot. Even I had dreams at night about galloping on the horseback through the wild open steppe. “East or West, Home is Best.”
Have you learned any Hungarian words yet?
Igen, elemi magyar nyelvtudással rendelkezem. Köszönöm Magyarország és PPKE.
What is a goal of yours?
I want to go back to my home country and start my career in my professional field to get more experience and practical knowledge. I hope that I will have an opportunity to contribute to the development of my country in international stage.
What did you bring home from Hungary? What would be your message to students in your home country thinking about studying abroad?
Go out of the box. The most thing that I understood well is that we have to think different culture, religion, value and different condition. Anybody can have great ideas, but very few people can apply them into life. It depends on how much you matter these things when you make something.

Számos egyetem van Magyarországon, miért döntött úgy, hogy ide jön, miért a Pázmányt választotta?
Először is, a magyarországi tapasztalatok meglehetősen hasonlítanak Mongóliára, mindkét ország átélte a szocializmust, majd a kapitalizmust. Másodszor, a Magyar kormányzati ösztöndíj lehetőséget adott arra, hogy Magyarországon tanuljak és éljek. Az egyetemre történő jelentkezés során a Pázmány volt a második választásom. Készítettem egy interjút oktatókkal Skye-on keresztül és tetszett.
Mik voltak az elvárásai?
Általában megegyezett azzal, amit elvártam az európai város és a nemzetközi hallgatók imázsával kapcsolatban. De egy dolog nagyon érdekes volt számomra. Eltérő kultúránk különböző tapasztalatainak és különböző ismereteinek megosztása mindig elgondolkodtatott.
Hogy tetszett a Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem? Teljesültek az elvárásai?
Szerencsére sok barátságos emberrel ismerkedtem meg, tele tudással és magasan képzett oktatókkal. Nagyon élveztem a piliscsabai kollégiumot, kényelmes szobával csendes helyen. Olyan volt, mint az álom.
Szeretett itt tanulni? Mi volt a legjobb dolog a Pázmányon?
Igen, szerettem. A legjobb dolog az oktatóinkkal kapcsolatban volt. Tudásuk, tapasztalatuk és szakismeretük nagyszerű volt. Nagyon értékeltem ezt és sokat tanultam. Nagyon magas etikai normájuk van a nemzetközi hallgatókkal való kommunikációhoz és tiszteletben tartják a különféle kultúrákat. Nem csak az oktatóktól tanultunk, hanem a hallgatónk egymástól is tanultak.
Tudna mondani egy kihívást, amellyel a Pázmányon szembesült?
Természetesen minden új dolog kihívást jelent mindenkinek. De a legnagyobb kihívás a COVID19 járvány volt. Körülbelül egy félévig online kellett tanulnunk. De a képzésünk minden egyes részletéről e-mailben értesítettek és nagyon jól irányítottak. Természetesen voltak félreértések, de mindig próbáltak segíteni nekünk a problémáink megoldásában. És ebben az időben is a legfontosabb a szakdolgozatírás volt. Feladtam, és nem voltam biztos, hogy mindent befejezek. De mindent megtettem a témavezetőm nagy támogatásával és utasításával.
Melyek a legnagyobb különbségek az itteni és az otthoni egyetemi élet között?
A legnagyobb különbség a oktatók tendenciája. Az én hazámban a tanítási módszer elavult és túl általános. De nagyon nyitott a hallgatók és az oktatók közötti kapcsolatra. Úgy gondolom, nagyon fontos a hallgatókkal dolgozni és egyenlő esélyeket biztosítani számukra, hogy fejlesszék magukat a kutatási területükön. Ily módon valóban fejleszti a hallgató a kritikai gondolkodását.
Az itteni tapasztalata mit tanított Önnek?
Nagyon szerettem a nemzetközi hallgatókkal folytatott vitákat, az oktatók nagy munkájával, hogy megfelelő légkört teremtsenek a hallgatónk között.
Mit tanult önmagáról a Pázmányon töltött idő alatt?
A Pázmányon töltött idő alatt jöttem rá, hogy meg kell próbálnom minden magamtól telhetőt megtenni. Sok magasan képzett és komoly ember volt körülöttem. Minden egyes percben tanultam tőlük.
Mi lenne a tanácsa az elsőéves önmagának?
Azt tanácsolnám, hogy “próbálj meg megnyílni és bővítsd ismeretségi hálózatodat”.
Mit segített elérni a Stipendium Hungaricum ösztöndíjprogram?
Megszereztem a mesterképzési diplomámat, amelyet Európában teljes mértékben elfogadnak. De a legfontosabb ennél sokkal több. A jövőben úgy fogom látni mindezt, hogy alkalmazom az életemben.
Hogy tetszett Magyarország? Mit szeretett a legjobban? Mi volt a legmeglepőbb?
Európa több városába elutaztam. Ezt követően úgy éreztem, hogy Magyarország az egyik legbiztonságosabb hely Európában. Ez tetszett a legjobban nekem. Mintha otthon lennék. A legmeglepőbb az volt, hogy a magyar emberek nagyon kedvesek a külföldiekkel. Őszintén szeretnének segíteni. Nagyon kedvelik a mongolokat is, mert egyesek úgy vélik, hogy ugyanazok az őseink.
Mi volt az első benyomása itt?
Őszintén szólva az első benyomásom azt volt, hogy “oké, két évig ebben a régi épületekkel teli régi városban fogok élni”.
Hiányzott valami a hazájából, a szülővárosából?
Igen, természetesen, nomád lány vagyok. Nagyon hiányzott a hazám vad természete. Éjszakánként még álmaim is voltak arról, hogy a vad nyílt sztyeppén át lóháton vágtatok. “Kelet vagy nyugat, otthon a legjobb.”
Sikerült megtanulnia valamilyen magyar szót?
Igen, elemi magyar nyelvtudással rendelkezem. Köszönöm Magyarország és PPKE.
Milyen céljai vannak?
Vissza akarok térni hazámba és elkezdeni a karrieremet a szakmai területemen, hogy még több tapasztalatot és gyakorlati tudást szerezzek. Remélem, hogy lehetőségem lesz nemzetközi szinten is hozzájárulni hazám fejlődéséhez.
Mit üzenne a hazájában élő diákoknak a külföldi tanulmányokról?
Menj a megszokotton túl. Amit a legjobban megértettem az az, hogy más kultúrában, vallásban, értékben és más feltételekben is gondolkodni kell. Bárkinek lehetnek nagyszerű ötletei, de nagyon kevesen tudják alkalmazni ezeket az életben. Attól függ, mennyire számítanak ezek a dolgok, amikor csinálnak valamit.
